Engaging the next generation of consumers: why social media should be your business’s next storefront

Generation Z has officially entered the consumer marketplace. Individuals born between 1997 and 2012 are flocking to social media for a variety of reasons, but one of the largest is for discovery.

Whether it’s discovering personal passions or new perspectives, the behavior has expanded commerce opportunities on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.

Meta’s recently published Gen Z content consumption data highlights this, explaining that shopping has become naturally incorporated into the group’s social media habits.

“Sixty-seven percent [of Gen Z consumers] say they want to find out more about a brand or purchase a product if they have seen content or advertising for it several times on Meta,” states Meta.

This generation is leaving the door open for businesses of all sizes and locations. Now it’s all about landing in front of the right audience.

Meta’s insights also revealed that 63% of Gen Z actively and intentionally curate their Instagram and/or Facebook feeds.

In other words, users are training the algorithm to show content that is relevant to their interests or feels purposeful.

Your business’s offerings and products are more likely to cross the screens of interested Gen Z users than other generations on social media.

“Seventy-eight percent say they are most likely to discover new products or brands in video,” Meta provides.

The data showcases the type of content the generation is interacting with the most as short videos. While that may not be surprising, it’s the type of short videos the generation prefers that is unexpected.

Videos that offer one-to-one conversations, human presence or break the fourth wall tend to rank higher among Gen Z users.

According to Meta, the generation wants content that provides an intimate, connection-centered experience. Additionally, content should “code-switch” languages to reflect the platform where it’s posted.

Whether it’s for connection or self-development, the next generation of consumers is already online.

Establishing a digital presence and storefront for your brand or business is essential for remaining relevant among rising consumers.
